PT Reference blocks

Reference block 1

The reference block 1 is used in surface crack testing by penetrant testing (PT). The standard EN ISO 3452-3 "Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing - Part 3: Control specimen" describes the structure of this reference block.

It is supplied with a declaration of conformity according to EN ISO 3452-3 and inspection certificate according to EN 10204 "Metallic products - Types of inspection certificates", type 3.1.B.

Reference block 1 is used to define and control the sensitivity class of fluorescent and coloured product family.

It consists of four brass plates, each coated with a nickel-chromium layer of different thicknesses (10 µm, 20 µm, 30 µm and 50 µm) and thus exhibiting different crack depths. The crack depths are defined by the thickness of the nickel-chromium layer. The transverse cracks were created by stretching the plates in the longitudinal direction. The crack width : crack depth ratio is approximately 1 : 20 for each crack.

The reference block 1 is used to determine the sensitivity of

  • fluorescent penetrant testing systems with the plates: 10 µm, 20 µm, 30 µm and 50 µm
  • coloured penetrant testing systems with the plates: 30 µm and 50 µm

Reference block 2

The reference block 2 for penetrant testing (PT) according to EN ISO 3452-3 is supplied with test report and certificate on request. The standard EN ISO 3452-3 "Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing - Part 3: Control specimens" describes the design and acceptance conditions of reference block 2.

Reference block 2 is used in surface crack testing using penetrant testing. They are used for regular control of the testing process with coloured or fluorescent test agent systems. These include:

  • Control of sensitivity of indications
  • Control of the excess penetrant removal
  • Comparison of different products
  • Monitoring of the testing process of crack detection facilities

Reference block 2
according to EN ISO 3452-3

The reference block 2 consists of two parts:

  1. One half has five crack centers of different sizes to control the sensitivity of indications
  2. the other half consists of four areas with different roughness for the control of excess penetrant removal

Control of the sensitivity of indications and intermediate control of a fluorescent product with the reference block 2
